Freshwater (Bay) - In Search of Robert Hooke

Freshwater (Bay) - In Search of Robert Hooke

Renowned scientist, he was born in Freshwater in 1635. Famed for the earliest research with the microscope, he described and named the cell, was a founder of the science of geology, and discovered the law of springs/elasticity. His father, John Hooke, was the curate of All Saints Church, Freshwater. Tour starts at the medieval All Saints Church (listed in the Domesday survey of 1086). On to The Causeway, then to Freshwater Bay. Here visit St. Agnes Church (only thatched church on the Island). Discover the connection between the fabric of the church and Hooke. Optional free time at end of the tour – maybe to visit Dimbola (home of pioneer Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron – chargeable), or to visit The Piano Café (former workplace of Queen Victoria’s piano tuner).
