Marconi & The Birthplace of Radio

Marconi & The Birthplace of Radio

Totland - First wireless messages and paid wireless telegrams were relayed by Mr Garlick (postmaster).

Then a walk or drive to The Needles Pleasure Park to continue our tour.

Alternatively, we could meet you here.

The Needles is where Marconi first experimented with telegraphy and was the site of the world’s first permanent radio station. See and read his commemorative monument.

Take the Chairlift down, (weather permitting) sweeping across the glorious coloured cliffs of Alum Bay with their spectacular view of The Needles Lighthouse. If not, you can walk down ((provided you are relatively sure-footed) – adequately supportive footwear is required.

Then EITHER:

Ride or climb back up, followed by a spectacular drive along The Military Road with its superb panoramic views of the Island’s Jurassic Coast. At Niton, walk down to visit the Marconi Radio Station (National Trust), affording splendid views of St. Catherine’s Lighthouse. Hear the tragic tale of The Clarendon shipwreck of 1836 while you are down there.

OR

Take a boat ride out to The Needles (with commentary) and spend some time admiring this geological wonder at your leisure. Either walk or ride back up to the top and end your tour here, possibly looking in a shop or two or taking some refreshment or maybe visiting The Needles Old and New Batteries. Or take a spectacular walk up onto either Headon Warren or Tennyson Down. The choice is yours!
