Ryde

Ryde

First officially recognised as a town in 1829, it is now the largest town on the Island, boasting the widest beach with miles of glorious golden sands. In Victorian times Ryde was an elegant seaside town, frequented by the fashionably rich and royalty alike. It originally consisted of 2 separate village communities – upper (farming) and lower (fishing). Our tour offers something for everyone – tales from Victorian times right up to the present day. Discover Ryde’s connections with Queen Victoria, with The Isle of Wight Festival and Anthony Minghella (director of ‘The English Patient’)! Step onto the pier to view Ryde at its very best –thereby appreciating why locals call it ‘the town on the beach’ (as well as learning something about this fascinating pier itself). Watch the hovercraft coming in and out while hearing the story of its invention and how it was built on The Isle of Wight.
