This is the Island’s oldest and smallest town. We will find out why this tiny place - its centre really no more than an attractive square with a road off each corner - is owed town status!
With its quaint cobbled streets, it is dominated by the stunning 17th century St. James’ Church. Visit the church and learn some interesting/amusing facts – one relating to a statue sporting the wrong head!
Walk up the Grade 2 listed Yarmouth Pier (oldest wooden pier in the country) to observe the lively shipping activity on the water, including the comings and goings of the Lymington ferry.
Optional visit to Yarmouth Castle (English Heritage) for a short tour (chargeable, but strongly advisable). This was the last and most sophisticated of Henry VIII’s coastal defences. It was completed in 1547, with the first new-style ‘arrowhead’ artillery bastion built in England.
Your tour includes some free time for browsing in its very individual shops and/or visiting one of its charming tea shops.
