Visit Yarmouth Castle for a short tour (chargeable – optional but strongly advisable). This was the last and most sophisticated of Henry VIII’s coastal defences (completed 1547). First new-style ‘arrowhead’ artillery bastion built in England. The Island’s oldest and smallest town, with quaint cobbled streets, it is dominated by the stunning 17th century St. James’ Church. We visit the church and learn a few surprising facts! Walk up the Grade 2 listed Yarmouth Pier (oldest wooden pier in the country) - 50p charge - observing the lively shipping activity on the water, including the Lymington ferry coming in and out. Yarmouth also boasts a lovely view of the West Wight coastline. Your tour includes a little free time for browsing the unique shops and/or visiting one of its charming tea shops.
